U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement leadership visited the Torrance County Detention Facility Estancia, NM today to tour the facility. The agency continually adjusts its national detention system based on operational needs. The ability for the agency to remove individuals to their home countries, detain those that require detention and are a public safety threat is directly dependent on location and availability of detention space. ICE continues to modernize the immigration system and realize cost efficiencies across the operational landscape while continuing to work with DHS leadership and Congress to secure resources.

ICE announces new online system for filing G-28
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) announced today a new web-based paperless system for immigration attorneys and accredited representatives to provide information about their eligibility to act on behalf of noncitizens in ICE custody through secure online communications. ERO eFile is another step in the agency’s commitment to modernizing the immigration system.

ERO Salt Lake City arrests 8 noncitizens with sex offense convictions as part of nation-wide law enforcement effort
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers apprehended eight unlawfully present noncitizen sex offenders as part of a nation-wide law enforcement effort that netted 275 noncitizens that ran from Feb. 5 to Feb. 16.

HSI Nogales case results in firearms trafficking indictment for Nogales man
On Feb. 21, a federal grand jury indicted Jose Rene Murrieta, 30, of Nogales, on one count of smuggling goods from the United States, felony receipt of a firearm, and conspiracy to smuggle firearms out of the United States to promote a felony.

ERO Boston arrests Guatemalan national convicted of child sexual assault in Massachusetts
On Feb. 21, ERO Boston arrested an unlawfully present 34-year-old citizen of Guatemala in Gloucester who was recently convicted locally of indecent assault and battery on a child under the age of 14.

Retired police sergeant sentenced to 10 years for distributing child pornography following HSI Galveston, local partner investigation
Ryan N. Curving, a 50-year-old resident of Texas City, was sentenced in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas to 10 years in federal prison and was further ordered to pay $5,000 assessments to both the Justice for Victims Trafficking Act and the Amy, Vicky and Andy Child Pornography Victim Assistance Act, for a total of $10,000 in penalties.

ERO Philadelphia removes foreign fugitive wanted for drug trafficking to Brazil
ICE's ERO Philadelphia removed Miramar Martins De Brito, a citizen of Brazil with a final order of removal, to Brazil on Feb. 23. Martins is a foreign fugitive wanted by law enforcement authorities in Brazil for drug trafficking.

Florida man sentenced to 27 years for distributing, receiving, possessing child sexual abuse material
Jesse James Bertetto, 30, of Webster, was also ordered to register as a sex offender and pay $74,500 in restitution after a federal jury found him guilty on April 12, 2023.

ERO Baltimore apprehends Honduran national convicted of robbery in Maryland
In January 2023, ERO Baltimore lodged an immigration detainer against the Honduran noncitizen with the Montgomery County Detention Center in Rockville. However, the Montgomery County Detention Center refused to honor the detainer and released the noncitizen from custody three weeks later.

ICE ERO Philadelphia removed Miguel Angel Hernandez Moreno, a citizen of Colombia with a final order of removal, to Colombia on Feb. 13. Hernandez is a foreign fugitive wanted by law enforcement authorities in Colombia to complete his incarceration for conviction on a simple homicide with aggravating factors.

South Texas man sentenced to 30 years for producing child sexual abuse material following HSI Rio Grande Valley investigation
Ulysses Rubalcava, 34, of Weslaco, pleaded guilty Oct. 31, 2023, and was sentenced Feb. 20. At the hearing, the court noted his remorse, but explained how society deems these crimes as particularly heinous and that the court must protect children and the public to deter this type of crime.
